Luzhen is a fictional town where Lu Xun¡¯s stories occurred. The tributes often mentioned in Lu¡¯s writings will soon reappear in Luzhen Town, a town made real after the namesake. A shop in the ¡°Old Street¡± will sell these tributes as a feature of the old traditions the tourist administration want to restore. Tourists to the town will be able to satisfy their curiosity by looking at the tributes which will retain their ancient charms that once appealed to the royal courts very much.
Tribute system was one of the important tax systems in the ancient China. Tributes were local products that were famous, special, excellent, or new. They were the artistic innovation of skillful craftsman and the wisdom crystallization of working people. Shaoxing Tributes were of quality and each was only available from one unique production area. For instance, the famous Shaoxing melon tribute was made of upper-class green melon around 6 inch long, which were first cleansed, then dried and finally mixed with sweet sauce. It is said that this tribute was popular when millet gruel was served at breakfast at the royal court in the Qing Dynasty. Shaoxing pearl tea, another tribute, grew only in Pingshui area in Shaoxing. During the Qing Dynasty, there was a special ¡°Imperial Tea Garden¡± in Pingshui to produce the tribute tea.
Lu Xun mentioned these tributes many times in his works. He not only liked eating these tributes himself but also gave them to his relatives and friends, which were recorded in his letters and diary.
A tribute street is planned in the project "Luzhen Town, the Old Street" in the Keyan Scenic Zone. We are sure visitors will have good time feasting their eyes on these tributes and tasting them.
