The Statue in Keyan

The Stone Buddha Statue is located at the south foot of Keshan Mountain in Keqiao town. The sculpture masterpiece was built during the Sui dynasty or Tang dynasty. In the Ming Dynasty, the temple which housed the statue was rebuilt and renamed the Puzhao Temple. The stone Buddha was decorated with golden powder during the years in the reign of Emperor Kangxi. In the 1970s, the Buddha¡¯s both hands and legs below the knees were destroyed. In 1997, both hands and snail hair were repaired by the county cultural relic department.

The stone statue of Maitreya sits inside a grotto carved in a huge solitary rock. According to a survey in 1992, the grotto measures 27.3 meters in height. The Buddha statue sits on a pedestal 5.5 meters above the ground and is 11.3 meters in height. The whole piece is an altorelievo masterpiece. On the head are snail shape buns and the face is full and round; the eyes are open only a little and look downwards; the earlobes are so long that they almost touch the shoulders; the nose bridge bulges and his lips are thin; the face looks benign and stern at the same time; the left hand presses upon the knee and the gesture of his right hand shows that he is explaining a Buddhist sutra. The stone statue is dressed in a cassock with a low neckline showing his chest and a sash goes around the waist with a knot in front.

It has been on the list of cultural relics under county-level protection since 1961. Since 1997 it has been on the list of cultural relics under provincial-level protection.
