In 1823, the 3rd year of the Daoguang Period of the Qing Dynasty, he became military Jinshi after passing the highest imperial examination.
In 1827, he was appointed the assistant brigade commander in the navy stationed in Huangyan. In 1839, he was appointed the garrison commander of Zhenhai Town in Zhejiang Province. In August, 1839, the British army invaded Zhenhai. Ge asked two garrison commanders from neighboring towns to guard Xiaofeng Mountain and Zhushan Gate. Ge himself commanded an army to hold the major road against the invading British army. The invaders withdrew after the initial clash. Ge was praised for his achievements. The British army attacked again. Though fighting heroically, Ge and his soldiers were not able to repulse the enemies. He sent an urgent request to the headquarters for reinforcements, but his request was turned down. He did not reveal the bad news to his soldiers. Instead, he talked to soldiers to boost their morale. It rained. Ge and his troop fought in the rain for six days and nights. During this time, he ate only a few cakes, so did his soldiers. Finally, the British army seized the Zhushan Gate. Ge led over 200 soldiers to fight with swords on foot. They killed numerous enemies. He was wounded over 40 times, including a major wound through his chest, but he fought with his sword. He leaned against a cliff and died after bullets hit him several times. He died heroically for the country. A brave villager named Xu Bao carried Ge¡¯s corpse by boat to Zhenhai in the night. The Xuanzong Emperor wept after learning Ge¡¯s death and wrote a decree for a burial for Ge. The pension for Ge was at the level for a provincial commander-in-chief. Ge was buried in a place north to Huangwan Temple, Sanquanwang Village, Suoqian Township, Xiaoshan County.
