The population was 724,191 in the county at the end of 2001, including 107,005 urban residents. The total number of households at the year end was 23,841. The year 2001 saw 7,644 new births at a rate of 10.56‰ and 4,797 deaths at the rate of 6.62‰. The population’s natural growth rate stood at 3．94‰.
Of the population, the Han nationality dominated, accounting for 99.7% while minority people accounted only for 0.3%. At present the county has 24 minority nationalities such as the Dong, Miao, She, Zhuang, Buyi, Hui, Naxi, Tujia, Li, Mulan, Bai, Yi, Man, Shui, Mongolian, Yao, Korean, Dai, Hani, Maonan, Lishu, Gelao, Khalkhas, Jinpo. Most of them are from Guangxi, Yuannan, Guizhou, Hunan and Sichuan and the minority populations are on the increase over the years. Of the minority nationalities in the county, women accounts for the majority. Of the 2471 people of minority nationalities, 2,414 are women, accounting for 97.7% while there are only 57 men accounting for 2.3%. |
