| Shaoxing County dates back thousands of years. In October 1949 when the People¨s Republic of China was founded, Shaoxing County¨s capital city was separated as Shaoxing Municipality. The eastern part of the county was named Kuaiji County with its capital in Gaobu. The western part of the previous county remained as Shaoxing County with its capital relocated to Keqiao. This was how Keqiao became Shaoxing County¨s government seat for the first time in history.
On May 9, 1950, the two counties and the municipality coalesced as one single Shaoxing County with the capital in the city proper of Shaoxing. On September 1950, the city proper was again separated as Shaoxing Municipality and Shaoxing County was reestablished. The municipality and the county shared Shaoxing city as the seat of their respective governments. On February 21, 1958, the municipality was abolished and integrated with the county again. On January 11, 1962, the urban Shaoxing became Shaoxing Municipality again, but as part of the county. On January 3, 1963, the municipality was canceled and was renamed as Chengguan Township as part of Shaoxing County. On March 31, 1981, the county was canceled and Shaoxing Municipality was established as a city at county level. On July 23, 1983, the State Council approved the implementation of the city-leads-county system. Under this system, Shaoxing Commissioner¨s Office was canceled, and Shaoxing Municipality at the county level came into being and Shaoxing Municipality at the county level was canceled and it was renamed as Shaoxing County with the county government seated in the city proper of Shaoxing. On September 20 in the same year, in the spirit of a notice issued by the provincial government¨s administrative office, the urban area of Shaoxing County and five townships (Tingshan, Yuling, Lingzhi, Chengdong, and Meishan) that neighbor the city and Donghu Township were integrated as Yuecheng District as part of Shaoxing Municipality. In July 2000, another five townships (Dongpu, Jianhu, Gaobu, Mashan, and Domen) under Shaoxing County were cut out from the county and integrated with the Yucheng district of Shaoxing Municipality. In October 2000, the county¨s administrative center moved to Keqiao on a trial basis. On January 13, 2001, the relocation was approved by the State Council. On March 23, 2001, a ceremony was held and the county government was officially relocated to Keqiao. |
