The county has 229 schools with an aggregate student population of 126,501. The enrollment rate of students of the senior high school age is 90%. The county education network enables all the schools to share the resources on the whole. In 2002, 96.1% of the students who took the annual college entrance examination were above the threshold enrollment score.

The county boasts a contingent of 33,493 professionals in various technological and scientific fields, including 7,310 holders of senior professional titles. There are 11 state-level high-tech enterprises in the county. 110 state patents have been issued to holders in Shaoxing.

Culture and Public Health

Shaoxing Little Hundred Flowers Yue Opera Troupe is a provincial-grade drama troupe with three state first-grade performers and one Mei-flower prize winner.

There are 26 medical and public health institutions in the county with 1,820 beds and a team of 2,092 medical professionals.

Spiritual Civilization Construction

Shaoxing County has been recognized for achievements in the spiritual civilization programs for rural areas. For its excellent rural works, the county has won honors from the central government and the provincial government.

Environmental Protection

Shaoxing County attaches great importance to environmental protection. 500,000 tons of wastewater is treated every day. Efforts have been made to promote ISO 14000 green certificate in the county. 36 enterprises in the county have started their individual programs for compliance and 20 have been awarded the certificate. In 2002, Shaoxing County was recommended to the UN’s Environment Program by the State Environmental Protection Administration as a candidate for Global 500 awards to environmentalists. Shaoxing was the only county-level administrative unit in China recommended.
